Description

The global Tertio Butyl Mercaptan (TBM) market size is predicted to grow from US$ 250 million in 2025 to US$ 327 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 4.2% from 2026 to 2032.

Tertio Butyl Mercaptan (TBM) is an organic compound with the chemical formula C4H9SH. TBM is a thiol compound with a strong foul odor. It is often used as an odorizer, added to colorless and odorless gas (such as natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas), so that gas leaks or failures can be detected in time. In addition, TBM can also be used as a reagent or catalyst precursor in chemical synthesis reactions. It can participate in a series of organic synthesis reactions, such as nucleophilic substitution reactions, sulfidation reactions, etc.In 2024, global Tertio Butyl Mercaptan (TBM) production reached approximately 109 K MT, with an average global market price of around US$ 2351 per MT.

The tert-butyl mercaptan (TBM) market is driven primarily by its role as a gas odorant/blendstock for natural gas and LPG/propane: odorization is a safety-critical requirement for distribution networks, so demand tracks gas grid expansion and renewal (new connections, replacement of aging mains, urbanization), plus higher scrutiny on leak detection and tighter operating procedures that increase the consistency (and sometimes the dosage management) of odorant injection. TBM demand is also supported by its use as a chemical intermediate in certain specialty syntheses (including some agrichemical and specialty chemical pathways), but the largest and most stable pull typically comes from the regulated “energy safety” end-use where odorants are non-discretionary.

Upstream, TBM supply is closely linked to C4 petrochemical streams and sulfur chemistry: it is commonly produced by reacting isobutylene (or tert-butanol-derived isobutylene) with hydrogen sulfide, using acid/catalyst systems, followed by purification and distribution in tight, odor-controlled logistics. As a result, TBM costs and availability are influenced by the isobutylene market (which competes with gasoline alkylate, butyl rubber, MTBE/ETBE and other C4 derivatives), refinery/steam cracker operating rates, and hydrogen sulfide/sulfur recovery dynamics tied to refining and gas processing; downstream odorant formulators also rely on upstream supply of other organosulfur components used in blends (and the associated blending, QA, and hazardous transport/packaging infrastructure).

TBM producers typically operate at specialty-chemical gross margin levels (often mid-teens to high-20% gross margin), with higher margins more likely for integrated producers selling formulated odorant blends and lower margins during feedstock volatility or when C4/sulfur input costs move faster than price pass-through.
