Description

The global Short Glass Fiber Reinforced PBT market size is predicted to grow from US$ 1816 million in 2025 to US$ 2959 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 7.4% from 2026 to 2032.

Global sales of short glass fiber reinforced PBT reached 610,000 tons in 2025, with an average price of $3,008 per ton.

Short glass fiber reinforced PBT (SFR-PBT) is a crystalline thermoplastic composite material obtained by melt-blending and granulating alkali-free chopped glass fibers (0.2-4.5 mm in length and 7-13 μm in diameter) with polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) resin using a twin-screw extruder. The fibers exhibit random orientation in the granules, allowing for high-speed molding on conventional injection molding machines. It combines high rigidity, low moisture absorption, and excellent electrical properties, making it a mainstream material for thin-walled precision components such as electronic connectors and automotive ignition coils.

On the raw material side, PBT resin accounts for 60-70% of the formulation weight and 65-75% of the cost. Its monomers, terephthalic acid and 1,4-butanediol, are both derived from the petrochemical route, with prices fluctuating along the crude oil-PTA chain. Short-cut alkali-free glass fiber accounts for 25-35% and 18-22% of the cost. It is made by melting and drawing minerals such as quartz sand and limestone, then cutting the fibers short. This process is energy-intensive and sensitive to natural gas prices. The remaining 5-10% consists of coupling agents, transesterification inhibitors, antioxidants, and lubricants. Overall, raw material costs account for 75-80% of the ex-factory price, making PBT resin prices the primary driver of cost fluctuations.
