A screw classifier (also known as a spiral classifier) is a mechanical separation device used in the dressing industry to classify and dewater mineral slurries based on particle size and sedimentation rate. It consists of a sloped tank with a rotating helical screw that transports settled solids upward while allowing finer particles to overflow with water. The primary function of a screw classifier is to divide ore pulp into coarse and fine fractions—coarse material is returned to the grinding process for further reduction, while fine material proceeds to the next stage of beneficiation, such as flotation or gravity separation. Screw classifiers are widely used in conjunction with ball mills and rod mills in mineral processing plants, particularly for ores such as iron, copper, gold, lead, zinc, and tungsten.
