A rotary valve actuator is an actuator that converts electrical, pneumatic or hydraulic energy into limited-angle rotary motion (typically 90° or 180°) to open, close or modulate rotary valves such as ball, butterfly and plug valves. Rotary valve actuators are usually mounted directly on the valve stem or shaft and deliver a specified output torque and rotation angle in response to a control signal. They can be on/off (quarter-turn) or modulating, and are widely used in process industries for remote and automatic valve control. In the rotary valve actuator value chain, upstream suppliers provide key materials and components such as cast or forged actuator housings and mounting brackets made from carbon steel, stainless steel or aluminum; precision gears, racks, pistons and bearings; electric motors and gearboxes; pneumatic cylinders, seals and elastomers; as well as control electronics, position sensors and valve positioners, typically from large motion-control and pneumatics vendors like Parker, SMC and various motor/drive manufacturers. Downstream, these actuators are sold either as stand-alone units to valve automation distributors or as complete “actuated valve packages” into EPCs, skid builders and end-users in oil & gas, chemical, power generation, water & wastewater, HVAC, mining and food & beverage industries.
