Description

The global Resolver for Automotive market size is predicted to grow from US$ 242 million in 2025 to US$ 615 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 13.7% from 2026 to 2032.

A resolver is an angle sensor based on the principle of electromagnetic induction, commonly used to measure the position and angle of rotating shafts. Essentially, it is a special type of transformer that converts mechanical rotation angles into electrical signals, outputting sinusoidal and cosine voltage signals to achieve precise position feedback. Compared to other angle sensors such as photoelectric encoders, resolvers have a simpler structure, are more reliable, and are particularly suitable for harsh environments with high temperatures, high vibrations, and strong electromagnetic interference.

A typical resolver consists of a stator and a rotor. The stator has an excitation winding and two orthogonally arranged induction windings (sin and cos phases), while the rotor has a coil that rotates with the shaft. When a high-frequency sinusoidal AC voltage is input to the excitation winding, an AC magnetic field is induced in the rotor. The rotor then couples this magnetic field to the two induction windings on the stator, generating two voltage outputs. The amplitude of the output signals varies with the rotor angle, exhibiting sinusoidal and cosine patterns respectively. By processing these two signals, the precise angle value can be calculated.

In the automotive industry, resolvers are widely used in the motor control systems of electric and hybrid vehicles to provide precise rotor position feedback. Especially in drive motors and electric power steering (EPS) systems, resolvers can continuously and reliably output real-time angle information of the motor shaft, thereby enabling efficient motor vector control. Due to their excellent resistance to high temperatures, vibration, and electromagnetic interference, resolvers are particularly suitable for operation in complex environments such as engine compartments or near electric drive systems. Furthermore, their contactless structure means a longer service life and lower maintenance costs, thus gradually becoming an ideal replacement for traditional Hall effect sensors and encoders.

The midstream of the automotive resolver industry chain is composed mainly of specialised resolver manufacturers and, to a lesser extent, Tier-1 system suppliers that provide integrated motor-sensor assemblies. These companies complete electromagnetic design, component processing, assembly, impregnation, calibration and reliability testing, transforming upstream materials such as high-grade silicon steel, bobbins, enameled copper wire, housings and harnesses into fully validated resolver products that can be directly installed in traction motors, EPS systems and other electric-drive applications.

On the basis of a bottom-up consolidation of key suppliers, China’s midstream automotive resolver revenue expanded from around USD 37 million in 2020 to roughly USD 151 million in 2024, with 2025E approaching USD 170 million. This corresponds to an annual compound growth rate of about 35% over 2020–2025E, broadly tracking the rapid penetration of NEVs and electric-assist steering. In 2020, Japanese manufacturers MinebeaMitsumi and Tamagawa Seiki together contributed close to 60% of the tracked China market, while domestic suppliers were still in the early ramp-up stage. By 2024, the pattern had reversed: domestic players such as Shanghai Yingshuang, Beijing Victory Electric, Changzhou Huaxuan Sensing, Hangzhou Kede Magnetic Components, Shenzhen HuaXia Magnetoelectronics, Delta Motion Technology and other local firms together accounted for more than 80% of recorded China revenue, and the combined share of Japanese incumbents fell to the mid-teens.

Business models in the midstream are characterised by a high degree of customisation, long qualification cycles and tight coupling with downstream platforms. Industry practice in China is predominantly “production-to-order”: resolver manufacturers arrange production according to confirmed customer orders and platform forecasts, and the procurement of cores, bobbins, enameled wire and other key materials is synchronised with these production plans. Resolvers are designed and tuned to specific motor geometries, control algorithms and operating environments, so sales are mainly direct to motor makers or vehicle OEMs rather than via distributors. Shanghai Yingshuang’s cooperation with BYD, for example, involved repeated plant audits, multiple rounds of sampling and small-batch trials before mass-production supply, and once a resolver is frozen on a given vehicle platform, OEMs tend to retain the supplier over the life of that platform because of stringent consistency and safety requirements.
