Prebaked anodes for aluminum (also known as prebaked consumable carbon anodes) are consumable carbon electrodes specifically designed for primary aluminum smelting via the Hall–Héroult process. They are manufactured from calcined petroleum coke and other carbonaceous aggregates with coal tar pitch as a binder, often incorporating recycled anode butts. The “green” anodes are molded, then baked in separate furnaces up to ~1,150 °C, and finally rodded with steel stubs before being used in electrolytic cells. During smelting, prebaked anodes are acting both as the current conductor and as the source of carbon for the anode reaction. The downstream is the global primary aluminum smelting industry, where prebaked anodes act as the “heart” of the electrolytic cells, conducting current and participating in the anode reaction.
