Amorphous graphite is a naturally occurring seam mineral that forms from the geologic metamorphism of anthracite coal. The morphology of amorphous graphite is typically granular except in extremely fine grinds, which have a flakey structure.

Natural amorphous graphite is used as a negative electrode auxiliary material and mixed with artificial graphite to reduce battery costs and grow rapidly. However, environmental protection remediation in China's main graphite producing areas has led to production capacity fluctuations. At the same time, battery-grade high-purity graphite (C≥99%) relies on imported equipment and has high technical barriers to purification.
