Description

According to this study, the global Microbial Carbon Capture System market size will reach US$ 15649 million by 2031.

A Microbial Carbon Capture System is a technological setup that utilizes the metabolic activities of specific microorganisms to capture and transform carbon dioxide from the atmosphere or industrial emissions into organic or inorganic carbon compounds, thereby achieving carbon fixation.

Working Principles

- Biological Absorption: Microorganisms absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere through their cell membranes via passive or active transport. This includes simple diffusion, where carbon dioxide molecules freely diffuse through the lipid bilayer of the cell membrane driven by the gas partial pressure gradient; facilitated diffusion, which relies on specific carrier proteins like carbonic anhydrase and carbonate dehydratase to assist carbon dioxide in crossing the cell membrane by catalyzing the reaction of carbon dioxide with water to form bicarbonate ions; and active transport, which requires the consumption of cellular energy to transport carbon dioxide against the concentration gradient into the cell through transporter proteins.

- Biological Conversion: It is the core process of microbial carbon capture, in which microorganisms convert the absorbed carbon dioxide into organic or inorganic carbon compounds. The main types include photosynthesis, chemosynthesis, and carbonation. Photosynthesis is the process by which autotrophic microorganisms such as plants, algae, and cyanobacteria use light energy to convert carbon dioxide into organic matter. In the light - reaction stage, water is decomposed to produce oxygen and reducing power (NADPH), and in the dark - reaction stage, carbon dioxide and ATP are used to synthesize glucose. Chemosynthesis is the process by which heterotrophic microorganisms use chemical energy to convert carbon dioxide into organic matter. Microorganisms such as sulfur - bacteria and iron - bacteria can use inorganic sulfides or iron oxides as electron donors to fix carbon dioxide through metabolic pathways such as the tricarboxylic acid cycle (TCA). Carbonation occurs mainly in calcifying organisms such as corals and shellfish.

- Biological Mineralization: It is another important way of microbial carbon capture. Microorganisms secrete organic matrices to guide the crystallization of inorganic carbonates, forming biomineralized structures. This process involves the interaction between organic acids, polysaccharides, and other ligands secreted by microorganisms and inorganic ions, which regulate the crystal morphology and growth.
