A compass uses magnetic sensors to measure the Earth"s magnetic field to determine direction. A magnetic sensor is a device capable of detecting and measuring magnetic fields. In compasses, the commonly used magnetic sensors are magnetoresistive sensors or magnetometers. Magnetoresistive sensors (also known as magnetoresistive gauges) work on the basis of the magnetoresistance effect. They are made of a magnetically sensitive material whose resistance changes when a magnetic field is applied to it. Magnetoresistive sensors typically consist of one or more magnetically sensitive materials, such as ferromagnets or magnetoresistive thin films. By measuring the change in resistance, the direction and strength of the magnetic field can be determined. Another commonly used magnetic sensor is a magnetometer, also known as a Hall effect sensor. They are based on the Hall effect, where when a magnetic field is applied across a Hall element, a potential difference is created. A magnetometer usually consists of a Hall element and a signal processing circuit to measure the strength and direction of a magnetic field. In a compass, these magnetic sensors sense the Earth"s magnetic field and convert it into an electrical signal. By analyzing and processing these signals, the compass can determine the orientation of the device relative to the Earth"s magnetic field, providing navigation and positioning functions
