The MIT Folding Endurance Tester is an instrument designed to evaluate the folding resistance of materials such as paper, cardboard, leather, and plastic films. It operates based on the principle of mechanical continuous folding. During the test, the sample is placed between two parallel plates and subjected to a certain pressure to cause bending deformation. The folding mechanism, consisting of two cooperating folding jaws, clamps the sample, with one jaw fixed and the other moving reciprocally at a specified angle and speed to apply folding stress. As the number of folds increases, micro - cracks gradually form in the material due to stress concentration and eventually lead to fracture. The tester accurately controls parameters such as folding angle, speed, and tension, and the counting device records the number of folds until the sample breaks, which is used to characterize the folding endurance of the material. It finds wide application in industries like papermaking, printing, packaging, and leather manufacturing, helping improve product quality and reduce waste rates.
