A Hall effect sensor is a semiconductor device that operates based on the Hall effect principle. It converts magnetic signals into electrical signals, enabling the detection of magnetic field strength, direction, and changes in magnetic fields.

The term "linear" primarily refers to the fact that the output quantity (voltage/current/digital quantity) maintains an approximately linear proportional relationship with the magnetic flux density B within the operating range, allowing for continuous measurement (position, displacement, angle, current, etc.).

Therefore, a linear Hall effect sensor is a type of magnetic field sensor/integrated circuit based on the Hall effect. Its core lies in the Hall-sensitive structure (Hall plate/element) within the chip, which senses the applied magnetic flux density under bias current and generates a Hall voltage. This voltage is then amplified with low offset, stabilized to zero (commonly through chopping/dynamic offset suppression), temperature compensated, and factory-adjusted to ensure that the output is approximately linearly proportional to the magnetic field strength within a specified range. Common product forms are small three-pin devices (VCC, GND, VOUT). Near the "zero magnetic field", the output is usually set to half of the power supply (proportional type). Positive/negative magnetic fields will cause the output voltage to be linearly shifted in the high/low direction. There are also programmable devices with integrated ADC/DSP, which provide a wider operating voltage, linearization and digital interface.
