Intrathecal Drug Delivery Systems are implantable medical devices designed to deliver medications directly into the intrathecal spacesurrounding the spinal cord. This targeted approach allows for significantly lower dosages of drugs—such as opioids, local anesthetics, or antispasmodics—compared to systemic administration, reducing side effects and improving pain or spasticity management. The system typically includes a programmable pump and a catheterthat are surgically implanted under the skin, often in the abdomen, with the catheter positioned in the spinal canal. IDDS is commonly used in the treatment of chronic pain, cancer pain, and severe spasticityin conditions like multiple sclerosis or cerebral palsy.
Intrathecal Drug Delivery Systems (IDDS) typically consist of an implantable pump and an intrathecal catheter designed to deliver medication directly into the spinal cord's intrathecal space. These systems feature programmable or fixed-rate pumps with reservoir capacities ranging from 20 to 50 mL, flow rates between 0.048 mL/day and 24 mL/day, and battery lives of 5 to 10 years. Constructed from biocompatible materials such as titanium, the pumps are often MRI-conditional and wirelessly programmable. The catheters, made from silicone or polyurethane, usually measure 30–120 cm in length with an outer diameter of 0.6–1.2 mm. Commonly administered drugs include morphine, baclofen, and hydromorphone in high concentrations, suitable for long-term pain or spasticity management. These systems are primarily used in chronic pain, cancer pain, and severe spasticity therapy, offering precise, localized drug delivery while minimizing systemic side effects.
