Global sales of glass fiber thermoplastics reached 3.98 million tons in 2025, with an average price of US$2,467 per ton.

Glass fiber reinforced thermoplastics (GFRTP) are lightweight, high-strength composite materials that can be repeatedly heated and melted, and are recyclable. These materials consist of glass fibers (chopped, long, or continuous) uniformly dispersed in a thermoplastic resin matrix (such as PP, PA, PBT, ABS, PC, etc.). The fibers are then melt-blended, extruded, granulated, or in-line compounded before injection molding/compression molding. Their tensile strength can be 50–200% higher than pure resin, their elastic modulus 2–4 times higher, and their heat distortion temperature 30–100°C higher, while maintaining efficient thermoplastic processing and weldability.

The raw materials for glass fiber thermoplastic (GFRTP) mainly consist of two parts: glass fiber and thermoplastic resin. Glass fiber is typically made from chopped strands or untwisted roving, costing approximately $1.8–5/kg and accounting for 10–30 wt%. The resin varies depending on performance requirements, ranging from low-cost PP and PE to engineering-grade PA and PET, and then to high-end PPS and PEEK. PP granules cost approximately $1–1.5/kg, while PEEK can reach $60–80/kg, accounting for 60–85 wt% of the formulation. It is supplemented with 0–5 wt% of coupling agents, antioxidants, and other additives. Therefore, the overall raw material cost can fluctuate between $2–20/kg depending on the resin grade.
