Due to the unique nature of aluminum nitride (it is a covalent compound with a low self-diffusion coefficient), pure aluminum nitride powder is difficult to sinter into a dense structure at conventional sintering temperatures, which can affect the thermal conductivity of electrostatic chucks. The primary solution currently is to add certain sintering aids (such as CaO, Y₂O₃, etc.) during the sintering of aluminum nitride powder to promote sintering and thereby enhance the thermal conductivity of aluminum nitride ceramics.
