Electrochlorination Ballast Water Management System is a shipboard technology designed to treat and disinfect ballast water by generating sodium hypochlorite on-site through the electrolysis of seawater. This method effectively eliminates invasive aquatic organisms and pathogens before ballast water is discharged into new marine environments, thereby ensuring compliance with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Ballast Water Management Convention and U.S. Coast Guard regulations. The Electrochlorination Ballast Water Management System operates by drawing seawater into an electrolyzer where electric current splits the saltwater, producing a dilute hypochlorite solution (active chlorine). This biocide is then injected into the ballast water tanks during ballasting, initiating an oxidative disinfection process that destroys microorganisms. After a predefined holding period, the ballast water is neutralized, if necessary, using sodium thiosulfate or another neutralizing agent, to ensure environmentally safe discharge.
