Global n-Dodecyl Mercaptan Market Growth 2026-2032
Description
The global n-Dodecyl Mercaptan market size is predicted to grow from US$ 303 million in 2025 to US$ 424 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.1% from 2026 to 2032.
Normal dodecyl mercaptan (n-dodecyl mercaptan, 1-dodecanethiol, lauryl mercaptan, NDDM, CAS # 112-55-0) is used as reactants in the synthesis of antioxidants, which minimize undesirable effects from processes such as the stabilization of tin.In 2024, global n-Dodecyl Mercaptan production reached approximately 132 K MT, with an average global market price of around US$ 2356 per MT.
n-Dodecyl mercaptan (n-DDM) demand is driven mainly by its role as a chain-transfer agent in free-radical polymerization, where it controls molecular weight and viscosity in products like synthetic rubber and latex (notably emulsion processes used for various elastomers), ABS, and acrylic emulsions/adhesives; therefore, consumption tends to rise with tire and automotive production, construction-related demand for coatings/adhesives/sealants, and broader growth in water-based polymer dispersions used in paints, paper/packaging, and pressure-sensitive adhesives. A secondary set of drivers comes from niche uses where linear mercaptans act as intermediates (or functional additives) in specialty formulations, but the “volume anchor” is typically the polymer and elastomer manufacturing cycle.
Upstream, n-DDM is closely tied to the C12 linear hydrocarbon chain and sulfur chemistry: the key feedstock is often 1-dodecene (C12 linear alpha-olefin) (or an equivalent C12 linear stream), which is produced from ethylene oligomerization and competes with other large outlets (detergent alcohol chains, plasticizer intermediates, synthetic lubricants/PAO and surfactant value chains) for the same C12 cuts. The sulfur source is typically hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) or sulfur-derived reagents coming from refining and natural-gas processing (sulfur recovery units), and industrial production commonly involves adding H₂S across the C12 olefin (with catalysts and tight purification) followed by odor-controlled storage and hazardous logistics—so upstream cost/availability swings are driven by ethylene/LAO spreads, refinery and cracker operating rates, sulfur/H₂S handling constraints, energy costs, and transportation/ESG controls around odorous thiols.
Gross profit margins for n-DDM producers are generally specialty-chemical-like but feedstock-sensitive—often in the mid-teens to mid-20% range
