Description

The global Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polypropylene market size is predicted to grow from US$ 429 million in 2025 to US$ 734 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 7.9% from 2026 to 2032.

Global sales of Fiber Reinforced Modified Polypropylene (CFRP) reached 101,308 tons in 2025, with an average price of $4,326 per ton.

Carbon fiber reinforced polymer or carbon fiber reinforced plastic, is an extremely strong and light fiber-reinforced plastic which contains carbon fibers. Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polypropylene is one of CFRPs. CFRPs can be expensive to produce, but are commonly used wherever high strength-to-weight ratio and stiffness (rigidity) are required, such as aerospace, superstructures of ships, automotive, civil engineering, sports equipment, and an increasing number of consumer and technical applications.

Composites include fiber-reinforced materials and organic matrices, with the most commonly used materials being Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) and Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) composites, followed by composites reinforced with aramid or natural fibers. After a decline in production in 2020, the global composites industry is gradually returning to pre-pandemic growth rates, with the energy, electronics/electrical, construction, marine and consumer goods markets showing rapid recovery. New growth opportunities are also emerging in emerging sectors such as electric and hydrogen-fueled vehicles, marine, sports and recreation, medical, electrical and electronics, oil and gas, furniture and design, defense and security, and renewable energy. Between now and the future, composites will provide higher performance, lighter, more energy efficient as well as more durable products in a wider range of applications and markets.

The raw materials for CFRP consist of two parts: carbon fibers, obtained by high-temperature carbonization of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) precursor fibers, accounting for 10–40% of the composite material's dry weight; and commercial-grade polypropylene resin (homogeneous or copolymer), supplemented with compatibilizers such as maleic anhydride-grafted PP, specialized sizing agents, and small amounts of initiators to improve interfacial adhesion. Currently, approximately 90% of carbon fiber still relies on the PAN route, with precursor costs accounting for about 50% of the carbon fiber selling price. The high-temperature furnace energy consumption required for carbonization and surface treatment reaches as high as 286 MJ/kg, keeping carbon fiber prices high. In the total cost of CF/PP, carbon fiber typically accounts for 70-80%, compatibilizers and additives for 5-10%, and the remainder for polypropylene resin and processing energy consumption. Therefore, reducing the price of PAN precursor or using low-cost lignin or polyolefin precursors is considered a key path to compressing composite material costs.
