Description

The global N-Butylene Oxide 1,2 market size is predicted to grow from US$ 75 million in 2025 to US$ 114 million in 2031; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 7.2% from 2025 to 2031.

The impact of the latest U.S. tariff measures and the corresponding policy responses from countries worldwide on market competitiveness, regional economic performance, and supply chain configurations will be comprehensively evaluated in this report.

N-Butylene Oxide 1,2 is an organic compound with ethereal odor. N- Butylene Oxide 1,2 is also known as 1,2-Epoxybutane, α-Butylene oxide, 1,2-Buteneoxide and 1,2-Butyleneoxide. It is flammable liquid and is soluble in water. N-butylene oxide 1,2 is clear colorless volatile liquid. N-butylene oxide 1,2 is a chiral epoxide synthesized through oxidation of 1-butene. The two main manufacturing processes of N-butylene oxide 1,2 are direct oxidation process and chlorohydrin process.

Currently, N-Butylene Oxide 1,2 preparation methods include chlorohydrin method, epoxidation method and so on. Chlorohydrin method is the traditional preparation method of N-Butylene Oxide 1,2, which has the advantages of high technological maturity and low production cost, but it is very easy to cause environmental pollution and the purity of the finished product is low. The main raw materials for the production of N-Butylene Oxide 1,2 by chlorohydrin method are 1-butene, chlorine gas and lime milk, and the production process is divided into three parts: chlorohydrinization, saponification and refining. Chlorohydrin method is the traditional method to prepare low carbon epoxide, although this method does not require high purity of raw materials, but in the production process consumes a large amount of C12 and produces wastewater containing CaCl2 and organochlorine, chlorohydrin method will be gradually phased out due to its serious pollution problems. Epoxidation is an emerging method for the preparation of N-Butylene Oxide 1,2, which can be subdivided into hydrogen peroxide oxidation (HPPO) and hydroisopropylbenzene oxidation (CHP). CHP method refers to the production of epoxybutane as well as α,α-dimethylbenzyl alcohol with butene as the raw material and isopropylbenzene peroxide as the oxidizing agent, which is fully reacted to produce the epoxybutane and α,α-dimethylbenzyl alcohol, and the method has the advantages of simple production process, green environmental protection and so on. The production of N-Butylene Oxide 1,2 by HPPO is a new method. The main raw materials of N-Butylene Oxide 1,2 are 1-butene and peroxyacetic acid. Under the action of catalyst, the active oxygen in peroxyacetic acid is transferred to 1-butene to obtain N-Butylene Oxide 1,2. Compared with the chlorohydrin method, peroxyacetic acid method has the advantages of no three-waste pollution, small steam consumption, and the by-product acetic acid can be recycled, but the reaction system of this method contains a large amount of acid, which is a serious corrosion of the equipment, and the operation requirements are also higher.

In recent years, with the application of titanium-silicon molecular sieves expanding, the method of preparing N-Butylene Oxide 1,2 by direct epoxidation of 1-butene with hydrogen peroxide as the oxidizing agent is beginning to get people's attention. This method not only has mild reaction conditions, but also greatly reduces the pollution to the environment.

At present, only BASF and Sinopec Yanshan Petrochemical is the company in the global commercial production.

On November 9, 2023, SINOPEC Yanshan Petrochemical's 4,000 tons/year CHP method N-Butylene Oxide 1,2 plant was successfully put into operation, which is the first CHP method N-Butylene Oxide 1,2 plant in the world.

In consumption market, Asia-Pacific is the fastest growing consumption regions due to the bigger demand of downstream applications and the commissioning of Sinopec Yanshan Petrochemical. Asia-Pacific occupied 31% of the global consumption revenue in total.

In terms of product market applications, the major ones are chemical intermediates, stabilizer for industrial solvents, nonionic surfactants and others. Among them, chemical intermediates is the most dominant application. the product sale share was 62%.
