Battery intelligent protection boards are integrated battery "safety stewards" with detection, protection, and management functions. They are mainly used in lithium battery packs, energy storage battery packs, and power systems for various portable/power devices. Through real-time monitoring of multiple parameters such as voltage, current, and temperature, they protect individual cells and battery packs from overcharge, over-discharge, overcurrent, short circuit, and overtemperature. They can also achieve cell balancing (equalization charging), SOC/remaining capacity estimation, fault diagnosis, and status reporting. Some intelligent protection boards also integrate MCUs and communication interfaces (such as UART, CAN, RS-485, Bluetooth, etc.), allowing them to link with the main control or cloud platform, supporting remote monitoring and strategy adjustment. This improves battery safety, lifespan, and maintainability, making it a key step in upgrading from a "simple protection board" to a "miniature BMS." Sales in 2025 were 290 million units, with an average price of $7, total production capacity of 340 million units, and a gross profit margin of 28%.

From the demand side, the battery intelligent protection board is no longer just a "small board," but a core component of the lithium battery industry chain that is rigid, safe, and continuously upgraded. It connects to high-growth applications such as power batteries, energy storage power stations, power tools, and AGVs/robots on one end, and to frequent thermal runaway accidents, insurance and certification requirements, and the accountability of automakers/OEMs for safety on the other. In the past, many low-to-mid-range scenarios used "simple protection boards + a few protection ICs," only addressing basic issues like overcharging, over-discharging, and short circuits. However, with rising battery energy density, faster charging rates, and larger single-pack capacity (especially in residential and commercial energy storage, two-wheeled vehicles, low-speed vehicles, and light-duty power applications), OEMs increasingly want protection boards to "do more": such as more refined single-cell sampling and equalization, multi-point monitoring of the temperature field, rough estimation of SOH/SOC, and real-time communication with the main controller and fault event tracking. This has directly driven many companies that originally only produced "small PCM boards" to either evolve towards "small BMS" or be forced to exit high-risk applications, remaining only in the extremely competitive 3C/low-end category.

From the supply side and competitive landscape perspective, battery smart protection boards are currently in a differentiation phase characterized by "severe homogenization in the low-end market and accelerated concentration in the high-end market." The low-end market (small-capacity lithium batteries, toys, electrical tools, etc.) has become so competitive that it's difficult to differentiate products based on copper prices and chip costs. The real bargaining power and growth potential come from several areas: First, intelligent protection/sampling units that meet automotive and energy storage requirements, deeply integrated with mainstream BMS chips, automotive-grade MCUs, and functional safety architectures, enabling them to pass system certifications from OEMs and power stations. Second, creating "batch-reusable universal intelligent protection board modules" around modular PACKs and standard cell platforms, helping PACK manufacturers and OEMs shorten development cycles and reduce verification costs. Third, using protection boards as data entry points, moving towards "FOTA upgrades, remote operation and maintenance, and full lifecycle health management," making protection boards/BMS more than just one-time hardware sales; they become the foundational data source for subsequent maintenance, tiered utilization assessments, and risk control pricing. For industry chain participants, the key to the future is not who can make a board cheaper, but who can solidify safety capabilities, algorithm capabilities, and system integration capabilities behind that board, gaining long-term trust and lock-in from upstream cell manufacturers and downstream OEMs.
