Automotive long glass fiber reinforced PBT (LFT-PBT) is produced by thoroughly impregnating continuous glass fiber rovings with PBT melt during pultrusion or in-line compounding processes, followed by pelletizing into 5–25 mm pellets. This process maintains a high aspect ratio in injection-molded parts, giving the material higher rigidity, creep resistance, and excellent impact toughness. It is suitable for load-bearing structures such as automotive front-end module frames, door anti-collision beams, and battery brackets.
On the raw material side, PBT resin accounts for 55-65% of the formulation mass, corresponding to 60-70% of the cost. Its monomers, terephthalic acid and butanediol, are both derived from petrochemical routes, with prices fluctuating with the crude oil-PTA chain. Continuous alkali-free glass fiber accounts for 30-40%, accounting for 20-25% of the cost. It is made by melting and drawing minerals such as quartz sand and limestone, then coating with coupling agents, resulting in high energy consumption and sensitivity to natural gas prices. The remaining 5% consists of ester exchange inhibitors, heat stabilizers, and other additives. Overall, raw material costs account for 75-80% of the ex-factory price, making PBT resin market conditions the primary driver of cost fluctuations.
