Automotive long glass fiber reinforced polypropylene is a thermoplastic composite material made from polypropylene as a matrix. Continuous glass fibers (average length ≥6 mm, maintaining ≥3.1 mm in the injection-molded product) are uniformly dispersed and cut into granules using an extrusion-traction process. Because the fiber length exceeds the critical length, a three-dimensional network can be formed within the injection-molded part, thus simultaneously achieving high rigidity, high impact toughness, and creep resistance.

The raw materials for automotive long glass fiber reinforced polypropylene (LGFPP) are mainly polypropylene resin (20–90 wt%) and continuous alkali-free glass fiber (10–40 wt%), supplemented with maleic anhydride-grafted PP compatibilizers, antioxidants, color masterbatches, and other additives. The resin is mostly high-flow copolymer PP (MFR 30–100 g/10 min), and the glass fiber monofilament diameter is 10–17 μm. It is produced as 10–12 mm long granules through melt impregnation, traction, and pelletizing. In terms of cost structure, polypropylene resin accounts for approximately 25–35%, glass fiber for 40–50%, compatibilizers, antioxidants, color masterbatches, and other additives for a combined 10–15%, with the remainder being energy consumption and manufacturing costs. Due to the relatively low price of glass fiber and the mature technology, the cost per ton of LGFPP is significantly lower than that of long carbon fiber or metal solutions, making it one of the most cost-effective structural composite materials for automotive lightweighting.
