Description

The global Automotive Glass Fiber Reinforced Thermosetting market size is predicted to grow from US$ 2334 million in 2025 to US$ 3606 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.5% from 2026 to 2032.

Global sales of automotive glass fiber reinforced thermosetting plastics are projected to reach 510,000 tons by 2025, with an average price of $4,638 per ton.

Automotive glass fiber reinforced thermosetting plastics (GFRP) are composite materials made from unsaturated polyester, epoxy, or vinyl ester thermosetting resins as the matrix and glass fiber as the reinforcement. They are formed through molding, RTM, or hand lay-up curing, resulting in a permanently cross-linked, non-remeltable composite material. GFRP combines lightweight, high strength, corrosion resistance, and the ability to handle complex shapes. In the automotive industry, it is mainly used for non-load-bearing body panels and functional components, such as body panels, bumpers, fairings, intake manifolds, engine hoods, and natural gas cylinders. It can reduce weight by 20-40% and is already being used in large quantities in low- to medium-volume models and heavy trucks in Europe, America, Japan, and China.

The raw material system of automotive glass fiber reinforced thermosetting plastics (GFRP) consists of three main parts: thermosetting resin, glass fiber, and fillers/additives. The matrix resin is usually unsaturated polyester (UP, accounting for about 75% of the formulation), epoxy, or vinyl ester, priced at $2–4/kg. The reinforcing phase is 1/32–2 inch (0.8–50 mm) chopped glass fiber, priced at $1.8–2.2/kg, accounting for 25–40% by weight. In addition, 0–30% of inexpensive fillers such as calcium carbonate and aluminum hydroxide, and 1–3% of additives such as curing agents, release agents, and colorants are added. The total raw material cost is about $2.5–4/kg, of which the resin cost accounts for 55–65%, the glass fiber accounts for 25–30%, and the fillers and additives account for 10–15%.
