Dimethyl Ether Market: Global Industry Trends, Share, Size, Growth, Opportunity and Forecast 2023-2028
Market Overview:
The global dimethyl ether (DME) market size reached US$ 6.1 Billion in 2022. Looking forward, IMARC Group expects the market to reach US$ 10.6 Billion by 2028, exhibiting a growth rate (CAGR) of 9.67% during 2023-2028.
Dimethyl ether (DME), or methoxy methane, is an odorless and colorless organic compound that is used as a substitute for energy fuels in compression ignition diesel engines. It is a clean-burning, non-toxic and renewable fuel with a high cetane value. It is synthetically produced by converting hydrocarbons to synthesis gas (syngas) through the gasification process. The syngas is converted to methanol by using a copper-based catalyst, with subsequent dehydration of methanol, thereby resulting in the production of DME. It is widely used as an alternative for transportation fuel, power plant fuel and propane in liquified petroleum gas (LPG) and as a raw material for manufacturing various chemical products.
Significant growth in the automotive industry, along with rapid industrialization across the globe, is one of the key factors driving the growth of the market. Furthermore, increasing environmental consciousness among the masses is also providing a boost to the market growth. Automobile manufacturers are rapidly replacing transportation fuels, such as diesel, petrol and LPG, with cleaner fuels that have high ignition value and low-levels of carbon emissions into the environment. In line with this, widespread adoption of DME as an aerosol propellant in the manufacturing of pharmaceuticals, paints, coatings and personal care products, such as perfumes and hair sprays, is driving the market further. Additionally, the growing requirement of DME for enhanced oil recovery and improved efficiency of various drilling and fracturing processes is also acting as a growth-inducing factor. For instance, DME is mixed with brine and is injected into the reservoir to swell up oil and reduce its viscosity, thereby enabling the extraction of remaining oil from mature fields.
