Worldwide Smartphone Forecast, 2022–2026
This IDC study presents the updated five-year forecast for smartphone shipments worldwide by operating system. The worldwide smartphone market will reach 1.38 billion units shipped in 2022, up 1.6% from the 1.36 billion units shipped in 2021. From there, shipments will hit 1.53 billion units in 2026, the final year of our forecast period, resulting in a CAGR of 2.3%."Although the 2.8% ASP growth will feel small compared with the 13.3% growth of 2021, ASPs will reach the $400 mark for the first time since 2011," said Anthony Scarsella, research director with IDC's Worldwide Mobile Device Trackers. "The increased demand and cost of premium flagships continue to push prices up across the smartphone industry as we hit $400 from a worldwide perspective. Average selling prices for iOS will break the $1,000 mark for the first time, and Android will witness its highest prices since 2013. Looking ahead, we do expect prices to start falling as 5G devices become more affordable across numerous markets. Next year should bring a 2.4% decline in ASP as prices will fall at a rate of 2.5% leading into 2026."
