Next-Generation OSS: Cloud Orchestration for Future Connectivity
This IDC Market Perspective examines the key strategic priorities that communication service providers (CSPs) must consider when investing into their next-generation operation support systems (OSS) platforms. In 2020, European CSPs faced unique challenges from the COVID-19 pandemic and the initial rollout of 5G. The network went through a stress test as more people worked from home and more enterprises needed remote services that required resilient broadband connections. Moving forward in a post-pandemic world, current deployed solutions of OSS will burden the CSPs and strongly inhibit them from addressing new business opportunities. "CSPs must harness the power of 5G and deliver a more advanced OSS to automate their networks and address the orchestration challenges of hybrid networks. 5G and next-generation networking will demand a level of resilience and scale that existing OSS are not designed to handle. OSS transformation should be a key strategic priority for CSPs looking to take advantage of the wide breadth of 5G opportunities, covering virtualized and traditional physical infrastructure and managing the network through end-to-end automation to deliver a level of agility and programmability for CSPs in the 5G era," said Ahmad Latif Ali, associate vice president at IDC.
