Description

The Future of Internet of Things, Part 1: Moving Beyond Endpoint Connectivity

The current landscape for Internet of Things (IoT) networks in Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan) (APEJ) and the use cases they support today are changing rapidly. Until recently, several challenges have been hindering the rapid deployment of cellular IoT at scale, with the exception of China having benefited from unique conditions with deployment at scale backed by state-sponsored incentives, a massive ecosystem of hardware vendors, and predictable and affordable pricing from the country's communications SPs. The rest of the region was missing many of these key enablers, including roaming, billing, and others. However, with the increased maturity of the ecosystem behind narrowband IoT (NB-IoT) and Long-Term Evolution for Machines (LTE-M), there is renewed momentum across APEJ, with several markets preparing large-scale launches."IoT has been much hyped in recent years, especially when one considers that NB-IoT and LTE-M were standardized and 'available' since 2016. China has been early with its backing of NB-IoT, but the increasing maturity of cellular IoT standards and related device ecosystems will drive a number of large-scale launches across Asia/Pacific in 2022 and beyond," says Shiv Putcha, contributing analyst, IDC Asia/Pacific.
