Description

Asia/Pacific and Japan Toward a 5G Network Slicing Future

Network slicing is a powerful architectural construct that is poised to have a profound impact on enterprise mobility. Technically speaking, network slicing is complex and requires the full 5G standalone core, but mobile network operators (MNOs) are starting to incorporate slicing into their 2023–2025 road maps and are conducting tests and trials with leading vendors. The medium- and long-term benefit for MNOs is that they can use slicing to create differentiated service offerings for both enterprise- and consumer-centric content services. Network slicing cuts across all major industries and will support use cases that are applicable industrywide, such as drone control, robotic and machine control, and IP camera streaming. "MNOs will need to find the right balance between promoting slicing offerings for enterprises and not creating unrealistic expectations with consumers," says Bill Rojas, adjunct research director, IDC's Asia/Pacific Communications Group.
