Artificial Intelligence in Capital Markets: Results of the 2021 AI Path Survey
This IDC Perspective reviews the findings of IDC's 2021 Worldwide Industry AI Path Survey specifically for artificial intelligence (AI) as a transformational technology within the capital markets industry. The survey defines artificial intelligence as enterprise applications powered by intelligent technologies such as machine learning, natural language processing, voice/speech recognition, image/video analysis, and time series analysis that drive insights, provide predictions, support communications, make recommendations, and automate tasks and processes. Investment banks, trading firms, and other capital markets participants adopt artificial intelligence to better leverage the vast stores of structured and unstructured data as their business models come under increasing pressure from margin compression, regulatory burden, and agile new market entrants. The successful application of artificial intelligence has shown enough promise across enough use cases to prompt ongoing growth in investment. "Our research strongly suggests that the strength of capital markets firms' competitive positioning will increasingly be defined by their ability to modernize their data architectures and leverage intelligent technologies such as artificial intelligence," says Thomas Shuster, research director, Worldwide Capital Markets Digital Transformation Strategies.
