Architecting Autonomous Networks: The Role of Cloud-Native Transformation of the Core

This IDC study emphasizes the importance of cloud-native architecture for communications SPs and technologies that facilitate automation. Mobile core handles multiple tasks such as data routing, subscriber management, authentication, policy management, among others. The core is largely centralized and based on proprietary hardware and software components for previous generations of cellular networks. As communications SPs approach autonomy in networks, modernizing the core network is instrumental in their journey. "Adopting cloud-native frameworks is key to advancing network automation. In turn, automation enhances the core network's flexibility and scalability while efficiently balancing costs," says Swathi Arunaa, senior research analyst, IDC Asia/Pacific, Telecom and IoT Practice. "Communications SPs in the region understand that virtualizing the core is important for their transformation but also acknowledge that these upgrades are hard to implement."
