Description

Introduction. This is the fourth volume in a series of eight that examines the market for polyurethane chemicals and their use in manufacturing polyurethane products in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA). This specific volume focuses on polyurethane coatings. The titles of all eight volumes are:

Volume 1: Raw Materials

Volume 2: Flexible Foam

Volume 3: Rigid Foam

Volume 4: Coatings

Volume 5: Adhesives and Sealants

Volume 6: Elastomers

Volume 7: Binders

Volume 8: End-Use Markets

Each volume can be used individually and includes a summary with details on the total use of polyurethane chemicals. This new study updates and revises IAL's research on the polyurethane industry in EMEA. The information is based on extensive interviews with raw material producers, suppliers, end users, systems houses, trade associations, and industry experts. The research for this report was conducted during the first quarter of 2025, with respondents providing figures for the full year of 2023. The report includes raw material consumption figures for all major polyurethane product types for 2024 and forecasts up to 2029.

SCOPE OF THE STUDY

The report covers the supply and demand of raw materials in the following geographic regions: Western Europe, Eastern Europe, and Middle East & Africa. Western Europe includes Austria, Benelux (Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg), France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Ireland, Nordic Countries (Sweden, Finland, Norway, Denmark), Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. Eastern Europe includes the Czech Republic, CIS (excluding Russia), Hungary, Other Eastern Europe (including the Baltic States, Bulgaria, and Romania), Poland, Russia, the Slovak Republic, Slovenia, and Turkiye. Middle East & Africa includes Algeria, East Africa, Egypt, Iran, Levant (Jordan, Lebanon, Syria), Morocco, Other GCC (Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar), Other Middle East, Rest of North Africa, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates, and West Africa.

METHODOLOGY.

The information in this volume comes from existing in-house data and an extensive interview program with leading product manufacturers, trade associations, raw material producers, and systems houses across EMEA. Published data and statistics were also reviewed to produce accurate figures for raw material consumption. Forecasts for PU products and raw material consumption for 2029 were calculated based on industry and economic forecasts, as well as other commercial and technical issues likely to affect the market. Detailed market analyses for all product sectors are in the relevant volumes. Totals may have slight discrepancies due to rounding.

PRODUCTS AND END USES.

Polyurethane coatings production and related raw material demand are broken down into the following categories:

Architectural Coatings

Other

UNITS OF VOLUME.

All volumes in the report are quoted in tonnes of finished PU coatings and tonnes of raw material consumed, which includes additives, fillers, and other materials.

FORECASTS.

The forecasts are based on industry comments and economic indicators. Forecasts for changes in production by product type and application are provided for each country covered in the report. These are five-year forecasts derived from industry comments and expectations from both end-user and raw material sectors. Forecasts for 2029 are provided alongside the actual production figures for 2024. Additional statistical information is available in Volume 8 of this report.

FORMULATIONS.

Because of the multitude of proprietary formulations, a number of assumptions about product formulations were necessarily made. These assumptions, expressed as % w/w formulations, are used to calculate raw material consumption by product. The figures are presented as exact figures because they are derived from these formulations.

Indicative Formulations. The following table shows the raw material formulations used for coatings, expressed as % w/w:

Architectural Coatings: 8% Acrylic Polyol, 37% Other Material, 5% PMDI, 16% Polyester Polyol, 10% Spec. Isocyanates, 15% Stand. P'ether Polyol, 9% TDI.
