According to our (Global Info Research) latest study, the global Wide Bore CT Scanner market size was valued at US$ 811 million in 2024 and is forecast to a readjusted size of USD 1286 million by 2031 with a CAGR of 6.9% during review period.
Wide Bore CT is a computer tomography device with an ultra-large scanning aperture. Its core design purpose is to expand the space for patients to pass through the aperture, thereby reducing patient movement during imaging, improving comfort, and expanding clinical application scenarios. The wide bore CT range refers to greater than or equal to 70 cm.
Since 2015, Wide Bore CT has become one of the fastest growing segments in the field of medical imaging equipment. This growth is due to the increase in the obese population, the popularization of interventional diagnosis and treatment, and the upgrading of precision medical needs, but technical barriers, cost pressure and regional market differences have also restricted its full penetration. In the next five years, the market will show three major characteristics: technology innovation-driven, application scenario differentiation, and accelerated domestic substitution.
Although Wide Bore CT solves the limitations of traditional equipment on patient size, its high cost is still the core pain point and is difficult for primary medical institutions to afford. In addition, the maintenance cost of Wide Bore CT is 30%-50% higher than that of conventional equipment, further limiting its promotion in resource-limited areas. At present, only about 25% of tertiary hospitals in the world are equipped with Wide Bore CT, while primary medical institutions still rely on traditional 50-60cm Bore equipment.
On the technical level, the balance between Wide Bore and imaging quality has not been completely broken through. Some models sacrifice the number of detector rows when expanding the Bore, resulting in a decrease in scanning speed (such as extending the single-circle scanning time to more than 2 seconds), which is difficult to meet emergency or dynamic imaging needs. In addition, the spatial stability control technology of ultra-wide Bore (≥80cm) devices still needs to be optimized and is easily disturbed by the patient's respiratory movement.
Compared with conventional Bore CT, the core breakthroughs of Wide Bore CT are reflected in three aspects:
1) Patient-friendly revolution: 80cm Bore enables obese patients (BMI≥35) to complete scanning without a customized examination bed, and the sedation requirement for children during examination is reduced by 50%;
2) Innovation in diagnosis and treatment mode: In scoliosis correction surgery, Wide Bore CT can achieve real-time three-dimensional navigation during surgery, reducing the surgical complication rate from 12% to 3%;
3) Win-win efficiency and precision: GE Revolution CT's "free breathing imaging" technology has increased the success rate of coronary CTA examinations from 78% of traditional equipment to 96%, while shortening the scanning time to 28 seconds.
Wide Bore CT is evolving from "high-end equipment" to "clinical necessity". With the deepening of domestic substitution and technological innovation iteration, it is expected that the global market size will achieve a new breakthrough by 2031. However, manufacturers need to address two key challenges: one is to reduce costs through modular design, and the other is to develop differentiated product lines that are suitable for hospitals of different levels.
