Renewable Natural Gas (RNG), also known as Sustainable Natural Gas (SNG) or biomethane, is a biogas which has been upgraded to a quality similar to fossil natural gas and having a methane concentration of 90% or greater. A biogas is a gaseous form of methane obtained from biomass. By upgrading the quality to that of natural gas, it becomes possible to distribute the gas to customers via the existing gas grid within existing appliances.

As an important part of the low-carbon energy structure, renewable natural gas is gradually moving from a marginal alternative fuel to a core role in the global energy strategy. Unlike traditional natural gas, RNG is obtained by converting organic waste into methane through processes such as anaerobic fermentation. Not only is carbon emission almost neutral, but it also has the function of synergistically solving social problems such as agricultural pollution, urban solid waste management, and wastewater treatment. According to the source of raw materials, RNG can be divided into three categories: First, agricultural source RNG, such as livestock and poultry manure, crop residues, and food processing waste, has the advantages of large gas production scale and wide distribution of raw materials; second, sewage and wastewater source RNG, relying on the anaerobic digestion system of urban sewage treatment plants, mature technology and stable gas quality, is an important supplier of urban clean energy; third, landfill source RNG, mainly recycles landfill gas generated in the landfill process, and injects it into the gas system or converts it into liquefied natural gas (LNG) after purification.

RNG is currently widely used in distributed power generation, industrial heat supply, urban gas network injection, and as a clean vehicle fuel for heavy trucks, buses, logistics vehicles, etc. Especially in the European and American markets, RNG is considered to be a "bridge energy" for the decarbonization of existing natural gas infrastructure, and promotes the realization of multiple goals such as green transportation, building energy supply, and regional energy independence through the "zero-carbon gas" label.

The core manufacturers of global renewable natural gas (Renewable Natural Gas) include Clean Energy Fuels, Archaea Energy, etc. The top three manufacturers account for about 30% of the global market share. North America is the world's largest market, accounting for more than 40% of the market share, followed by Europe and Asia Pacific, accounting for about 40% and 15% respectively.

By optimizing project operation and maintenance, opening up carbon financial channels and expanding cross-application scenarios through digital means, enterprises can not only achieve commercial profits, but also occupy a strategic position in the global transition to "carbon neutrality".
