Photovoltaic diamond wire is a precision cutting tool used for slicing photovoltaic (PV) silicon ingots into wafers. It consists of high-strength steel wire or multi-strand wire onto which mono- or polycrystalline diamond grains are electroplated, forming a single exposed layer of diamond grit. This allows high cutting efficiency, narrow kerf, and minimal subsurface damage. Product types are generally categorized by diamond grit size (typically in microns), diamond concentration, wire diameter and construction (single-strand vs multi-strand), plating material and thickness, and specialized geometries such as pearl-shaped or grooved profiles. Tungsten-core diamond wire is the dominant type for high-performance PV wafer slicing due to its strength and dimensional stability.

Photovoltaic diamond wire is primarily used for slicing mono- and multi-crystalline silicon ingots into wafers for solar cells. The technology allows higher cutting speed, lower material loss, and reduced subsurface damage compared with conventional slurry-based slicing. Other niche applications include cutting specialized crystalline materials, optical-grade substrates, or ceramics, but the PV segment accounts for more than 98% of total consumption. Future growth will be driven by continued expansion in solar wafer production, particularly for high-efficiency mono-Si cells and advanced heterojunction or PERC technologies.

Upstream: Diamond grit suppliers (synthetic and natural), plating chemicals, and high-strength wire or tungsten-core substrates. China dominates global supply, particularly tungsten-core wires and substrates, which account for over 90% of production. Key upstream players include Xiamen Tungsten and other Chinese manufacturers.

Midstream: Diamond wire producers apply diamond grit to the wire, control grit distribution, wire diameter and plating thickness, and integrate process parameters to optimize cutting performance. This segment also coordinates closely with saw machine OEMs.

Downstream: Solar wafer producers and service houses performing slicing, lapping, and polishing; module makers and PV cell manufacturers are end users. The global downstream consumption is heavily concentrated in China, reflecting the country’s leading role in PV manufacturing.
