According to our (Global Info Research) latest study, the global Low VOC and Zero VOC Paint market size was valued at US$ 10800 million in 2024 and is forecast to a readjusted size of USD 16760 million by 2031 with a CAGR of 6.5% during review period.

VOC is an acronym that stands for volatile organic compounds. As the planet shifts to more environmentally friendly products, paint companies follow suit by offering paint labeled "low VOC" or "no VOC." VOCs are volatile organic compounds or chemicals found in many building materials that give off gasses that can build up and harm people and the environment. VOCs are commonly found in paints as the medium that helps the paint glide onto a surface. Since every room in a house and the exterior are usually painted, VOCs are already everywhere. Paint can off-gas fumes for weeks, months, or years after initial application. "No VOC" and "low VOC" may undoubtedly sound better, and in many cases, they are better. Low-VOC paint means that the paint contains less than 50 grams per liter of volatile organic compounds. No-VOC or zero-VOC paint can still have some VOCs, but it must have less than 5 grams per liter. Even if they have no or low VOC, these paints may still contain other harmful chemicals. And, if you are mixing in color, the process often adds VOCs.

During the last decade, a growing interest could be observed for a sensitive and environmentally-aware lifestyle while taking into consideration the sustainable use and protection of natural resources. This trend of “going green” comprises not only the individual's private life but also big organizations like eco-friendly thinking companies and cities. A wealth of popular scientific books has been published within the last five to ten years targeting these different areas. In addition, strict environmental legislation has promoted the increased development of environmentally-friendly products in order to reduce the release of hazardous substances into the environment on a sustained basis. Known characteristic emission sources indoors are paints and coatings which might contribute significantly to poor air quality especially as they are commonly applied to large surfaces (ceilings, walls) leading to a high loading factor (surface-to-volume ratio). Therefore, the emission potential, the main substances released and the influencing factors concerning both solvent-borne and water-borne paints have been in the focus of research for a long period of time. The industry reacted to legal regulations by increasingly reducing the content of conventional organic solvents in coating formulations in order to offer products that are more environmentally-friendly and less toxic to human health. A first step in this process has been the introduction of water-based paints in the 1950s leading to the recent development of so called low-VOC and zero-VOC paints.
