Liquid Penetrant Testing (LPT), also known as dye penetrant testing or penetrant inspection, is a non-destructive testing method used to detect surface-breaking defects in materials. It is commonly used to inspect welds, castings, forgings, and other components for cracks, porosity, leaks, and other discontinuities.

The process involves applying a liquid penetrant, which is usually a colored dye or fluorescent material, to the surface of the material being inspected. The penetrant is allowed to seep into any surface defects through capillary action. After a specified dwell time, the excess penetrant is removed from the surface, leaving only the penetrant trapped in the defects.

Next, a developer is applied to the surface, which draws the trapped penetrant out of the defects and spreads it on the surface. This makes the defects visible and easier to detect. The developer can be a dry powder, a wet suspension, or a visible or fluorescent liquid.

Finally, the surface is inspected under appropriate lighting conditions. In the case of visible penetrants, the defects appear as colored indications against the background. Fluorescent penetrants require the use of ultraviolet (UV) light to excite the trapped penetrant, causing it to emit visible light and appear as bright indications against a dark background.

Liquid Penetrant Testing is a widely used method due to its simplicity, versatility, and relatively low cost. It can detect both surface and near-surface defects, and it is effective on a wide range of materials, including metals, plastics, ceramics, and composites. However, it is limited to detecting only open defects that are accessible to the penetrant, and it requires a clean and dry surface for accurate results.
