It is a natural component of coal tar and was first isolated and characterized from coal tar. It is also found in creosote at levels of 0.5–6 mg/kg. The English word chrysene originates from the Greek Χρύσoς (chrysos), meaning gold, due to the golden yellow color of its crystals, which is considered to be the correct color and characteristic of the compound when isolated. However, high-purity chlorine is colorless, and the yellow color is due to its trace orange-yellow isomer tetracene, which is not easy to separate.
