Description

The global Gaprin market size is expected to reach $ 502 million by 2032, rising at a market growth of 18.6% CAGR during the forecast period (2026-2032).

Gaprin is the dried biomass of inactivated cells obtained by culturing the non-pathogenic methanotrophic bacterium VSB-874 strain in natural gas. Contains more than 70% crude protein and all essential amino acids, including 4.9% lysine in DM, 1.9% methionine and cystine, 1.3% tryptophan, 3.3% arginine, 20 thiamine and 105mg/ kg. Giving different types of poultry complete feed mixtures containing Gaprin increased survival by 1.4 units, egg production by 2.1 units, weight gain in chickens and ducks by 1.3% to 7%, and animal savings of 50% or more protein feed.

Global microbial protein Gaprin is becoming a strategic alternative in the future protein supply structure. Due to its advantages of low carbon emissions, low land dependence, and high water resource utilization efficiency, it is reshaping the food and feed industry chain. Microbial protein is a high-protein biomass that uses microorganisms (such as fungi, bacteria, yeast or algae) to convert carbon sources such as sugars, methanol or carbon dioxide through fermentation engineering. According to its use, it is mainly divided into two categories: food-grade microbial protein and feed-grade microbial protein: the former is widely used in new foods such as plant meat products, protein bars, and dairy substitutes after refined and detoxified treatment; the latter is mostly used in the breeding industry, especially in aquatic products and livestock feed, to replace fish meal and soybean meal, reducing environmental footprint and resource pressure.

The main players in the global microbial protein (Gaprin) include Unibio, Calysta, Prtotelux, Metanica and Giprobiosyntez. The top five manufacturers in the world have a share of about 87%. Asia Pacific is the largest market, accounting for about 50%, followed by Europe and North America, and then Europe and North America, accounting for about 23% and 17% respectively. In terms of products, feed-grade microbial protein is the largest market segment, accounting for more than 97%. In terms of application, the largest level is animal feed, followed by food and beverage.

Microbial protein is becoming an important partner for plant-based food brands in the food and beverage industry due to its controllable nutritional composition, good flavor carrier function and anti-allergic properties; in the field of animal feed, it is becoming a key substitute for traditional feed protein (such as fish meal and soybean meal) due to its high protein conversion rate, short production cycle and strong disease resistance. In addition, as the technology matures, its potential applications in medical nutrition, emergency rations, space food and carbon neutral materials are also being actively developed.

In the future, with the continuous growth of the global population and the transformation of the meat consumption structure, the demand for efficient and sustainable alternative proteins will continue to expand, driving the evolution of the microbial protein industry in the following directions: First, breakthroughs in scale and low-cost production, including efficient strain improvement, continuous fermentation technology and carbon source diversification (such as methanol, CO₂); second, precise functional protein customization to meet the nutritional and flavor needs of different groups of people; third, the improvement of regulatory standards and the promotion of consumer education to promote market acceptance; fourth, integration with carbon capture and green energy to create a "carbon-nitrogen-protein" closed-loop industrial chain.

Manufacturers should focus on the following strategic actions: strengthen collaborative innovation in synthetic biology and fermentation engineering to improve protein yield and nutritional balance; expand upstream and downstream cooperation with food technology and feed giants to promote the integration and implementation of microbial proteins in different terminal products; at the same time, layout global market registration and regulatory docking to seize early market advantages. Only by taking into account the three major elements of technology, scale and consumer awareness can the microbial protein industry truly move from "substitutable" to "mainstream" and help the low-carbon transformation and protein security of the global food system.
