Description

The global Drag Reducing Agent market size is expected to reach $ 1235 million by 2032, rising at a market growth of 7.9% CAGR during the forecast period (2026-2032).

Drag reducers, also known as drag reducing agents (DRA) and flow improvers, are any material that reduces frictional pressure loss during fluid flow in a conduit or pipeline. Pressure loss reduction is achieved by reducing the level of turbulent motion in the flow. Using DRA allows increased flow using the same amount of energy or decreased pressure drop for the same flow rate of fluid in pipelines. In 2024, global Drag Reducing Agent production reached approximately 145 K MT, with an average global market price of around US$ 4551 per MT.

Drag Reducing Agent (DRA) demand is primarily driven by the need to move more hydrocarbons through existing pipeline infrastructure without building new lines or adding major mechanical upgrades. In crude oil, refined product and natural gas liquids pipelines, DRAs (usually high-molecular-weight polymers) are injected into the flowing stream to reduce turbulent friction, allowing operators either to increase throughput at the same pressure or to maintain flow while lowering pump energy. That makes them very attractive in regions where permitting new pipelines is difficult, where capacity is tight, or where seasonal peaks (e.g., harvest time, export surges, refinery outages elsewhere) push systems toward their hydraulic limits; they are often one of the fastest ways to debottleneck a line and delay or avoid heavy capex on additional pumps or looping.

A second set of market drivers comes from operating economics, reliability, and environmental pressure. By cutting friction losses, DRAs can reduce energy consumption and associated emissions for a given flow, which helps operators meet efficiency and ESG targets while lowering fuel and power costs—especially important when energy prices are high or carbon costs are rising. They are also used to manage operational challenges such as pressure constraints on older pipelines, flow assurance in long-distance lines, and optimization of new export routes, so midstream expansions, long-haul crude and product corridors, and cross-border pipelines all support underlying demand; in some regions, DRAs are also applied in multiphase pipelines, gathering systems, or even water and refined-product networks, adding smaller but growing niches beyond traditional crude oil service.

Overall, the drag reducing agent industry typically earns moderate-to-attractive gross profit margins—commonly in the mid-20s to mid-30s percent range.
