Direct Laser Writing (DLW) uses laser beam to create a controlled localized damage on the surface. The pattern is drawn in CAD program, which then is etched on the surface of material by a laser spot. In a typical setting, the laser spot is fixed, while the sample is moved under the beam. To prevent overwriting, the beam is switched off with shutters. DLW has been increasingly selected as a microfabrication route for efficient, cost-effective, high-resolution material synthesis and conversion. The new generation laser direct writing (New-Ge DLW) successfully overcomes shortcomings of the existing DLW and furnishes a variety of new opportunities to explore novel fabrication technologies and methods. It should be stressed that here the New-Ge DLW refers to traditional DLW based on a new principle of laser-matter non-linear interaction, not including femtosecond DLW (FsDLW) that has formed a single branch owing to its high-speed development and enormous difference in features from the traditional DLW. The expanded capability of lasers to participate in multiple fabrication steps at different implementation levels, from material engineering to device processing, indicates their future applicability to next-generation electronics, where more accessible, green microfabrication approaches integrate lasers as comprehensive tools.
