Aliphatic polyketones are a relatively new class of polymers with many attractive and unique properties. The two most common aliphatic ketones are poly(ethylene ketone) and copolymers of ethylene and propylene ketone. Both polymers have high tensile and impact strength, exceptionally high abrasion resistance and excellent tribological properties. Other interesting properties include excellent hydrolysis resistance, very low water absorption, high barrier properties against fuel and oxygen, and outstanding chemical resistance.

The core raw materials for POK synthesis are carbon monoxide (a by-product of tempering) and α-olefins (ethylene and propylene). Domestic integrated tempering and chemical production bases (such as Baowu and Shenghong) already have low-cost CO resources, but high-purity α-olefins still rely on imports for over 60%, creating a current cost bottleneck.

At present, the main manufacturer of aliphatic polyketone POK in the world is the Korean Hyosung Group, which has been developing and commercializing POK since 2004 and has successfully obtained patents related to raw material technology. As of now, the production of POK in the world is still mainly dominated by the Korean Hyosung Group. Although POK has excellent properties such as high strength, wear resistance, and chemical corrosion resistance, its market demand is relatively small due to its high production threshold, high technical difficulty, and relatively low market awareness. However, with the rapid development of the engineering plastics industry and the growing demand for new materials, the market potential of POK is gradually emerging.

Future Development Trends: Driven by a "Green Premium" and "Hydrogen Economy"

Monetizing Carbon Emission Advantages: The POK synthesis pathway uses a fixed amount of CO per mol, resulting in a net carbon sink of approximately 1.1 tCO₂-eq per ton of product. After the EU CBAM takes effect in 2026, automotive parts using POK will receive carbon emission credits of 70–90 €/ton. European OEMs have already tripled their POK usage targets for 2028. Hydrogen Energy and Fuel Cells: POK has a 30% lower hydrogen permeability (compared to PA12) and is resistant to chloride ion stress cracking. US and Japanese companies are evaluating using POK to replace PPS for hydrogen cylinder liners and fuel cell stack end plates. The average annual growth rate in this sector is expected to exceed 35% from 2025 to 2030, contributing to 18,000 tons of global POK demand in 2031.
