Hydrogen Aircraft - Thematic Intelligence
Description
Hydrogen Aircraft - Thematic Intelligence
Summary
Hydrogen power has been in development for some time, with hydrogen fuel cells being developed as far back as the 1930s. The move by major companies to invest in developing hydrogen aircraft for commercial use has been much more recent.
Hydrogen has significant potential; it can be produced in a way that is carbon-free and when used as a fuel it only produces water, making it appealing for states and companies attempting to reduce their climate impact. It also has significant energy potential since it is much more energy-dense than battery power, its main competitor. A key barrier to uptake is the relative size of fuel tanks needed to contain it and the advanced engines needed to utilize it.
The development of these aircraft faces major challenges in terms of technology as well as infrastructure: advancements need to be made to facilitate the use of hydrogen in commercial aircraft and to improve its viability in terms of long distances. There also needs to be significant investment in infrastructure to enable hydrogen to be produced and transported in sufficient quantities.
