Description

The United States gynecology robotic surgery market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.50% during the period 2025-2034.

United States Gynecology Robotic Surgery Market Likely to be Driven by Demand for Minimally Invasive Surgical Solutions

The United States gynecology robotic surgery market is likely to be driven by growing demand for minimally invasive procedures due to the advantages these processes offer, such as lower readmission rates, lesser complications, and faster recovery.

Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) is considered a significant surgical advancement in the last three decades. It changed surgical practise by providing well-proven benefits over traditional open surgery, including decreased surgical trauma and incision-related problems such as surgical-site infections, postoperative discomfort and hernia, and enabled shorter hospital stays and better cosmetic outcomes. Nonetheless, mastering MIS can be difficult technically since traditional laparoscopy has various drawbacks, including a two-dimensional (2D) monitor that limits in-depth perception, camera instability, limited range of motion, and steep learning curves.

Advancements in computer science and robotics have helped in overcoming the challenges of traditional laparoscopy, enhancing surgeons’ skills, achieving accuracy and greater precision during complex surgical procedures, and making MIS widely available. Haptic interfaces are employed to imitate and filter hand gestures, thereby directing surgical tools. Robotically aided technology confers advantages such as improved three-dimensional stereoscopic vision, wristed tools that enhance deftness, and tremor cancelling software that increases surgical precision. The use of robotic-assisted surgery is expected to increase, particularly by   gynecologist oncologists.

Robotic surgery has increased in popularity in recent years, especially in the area of benign hysterectomy. Hysterectomy is a common operation performed in gynecology. Nearly 600,000 hysterectomies are performed in the United States every year, out of which, almost 84% are for non-cancerous lesions. Over the years, the da Vinci robotic system has gained extensive acceptance in gynecology due to enhanced visualization and excellent dexterity as against conventional laparoscopic techniques. Approval of da Vinci surgical system for use in gynecologic surgery led to significant growth in robotic procedures. Hysterectomy has been the largest and most rapidly growing procedure for robotic surgery on the da Vinci system. FDA approval of the da Vinci robot for gynecologic surgery has also led to an increase in minimally invasive abdominal surgery for pelvic organ prolapse. In 2018, Intuitive Surgical commanded a little over than 80% of the robotic-assisted surgery system market share, with over $3.5bn in sales of its da Vinci systems, instruments and accessories.

Advantages Offered by Robotic-assisted Surgeries Over Traditional Methods Expected to Stimulate Growth

With respect to particular indications for robotic-assisted laparoscopic hysterectomy (RLH), it exhibits potential benefit over conventional laparoscopy in overweight women and in instances of large uteri. RLH offers advantages such as decreased blood loss, less postoperative pain, and shorter hospital stays as compared to vaginal hysterectomy, laparoscopic-assisted vaginal hysterectomy, and total laparoscopic hysterectomy. According to analyst reports, surgeons (especially those inexperienced in conventional laparoscopic procedures) in the USA may prefer robotic procedures as robotics is easier to learn.

On the basis of the success that laparoscopy had already attained, surgeons created and adopted robotic myomectomy. Because it is a suture-intensive surgery, the robotic approach has grown in favour. Robotic arms make suturing straightforward and easy, allowing surgeons with limited or no laparoscopic training in suturing technique to execute the treatment in a minimally invasive manner. However, drawbacks of robotic-assisted myomectomy include a limited field of vision and the inability to apply torque, which makes the removal of big myomas difficult. In cases of myomas greater than 10 cm, beyond the pelvis, a hybrid method (traditional laparoscopy with robotic aid) is recommended.

Through conventional laparoscopy, surgery for endometriosis is technically challenging. Robotic assistance may facilitate the procedure through a detailed and magnified 3D surgical view and enable better quality surgical dissection in complex cases.

High Costs May Hinder Market Growth

While robotic-assisted gynaecologic surgery has witnessed increased adoption, high costs associated with such systems may hinder market growth. Nevertheless, firms are looking to find solutions to decrease costs related to robotic-assisted technology. For example, in 2018, Olympus, a leading company engaged in devising and delivering innovative solutions for medical and surgical procedures, announced the launch of the ENDOEYE FLEX 3D and the FlexDex Needle Driver (3D/FlexDex) laparoscopic surgical solution. By way of an exclusive U.S. distribution agreement, the company sought to leverage its innovative ENDOEYE FLEX 3D laparoscopic imaging technology with the wristed needle-driver of FlexDex to augment of minimal access surgery capabilities while providing a cost-effective robotic solution. 3D/FlexDex can be employed in several types of procedures, including general surgery and gynecological specialties.
