Aquaculture Cage Market Report and Forecast 2025-2034
Description
The global aquaculture cage market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 4.60% during the period 2025-2034.
Global Aquaculture Cage Market Likely to be Driven by Increased Demand for Aquatic Products
Rising fish consumption, depleting fish stocks and poor farm economy have led to increased focus on production of fish in cages. Further, several small farmers are considering alternatives to conventional agricultural crops. Aquaculture is a fast expanding industry and offers opportunities even on a smaller scale. Cage culture also provides farmers the opportunity to use existing water resources which would most likely be unusable or have limited use in other purposes. These factors are expected to drive the demand for aquaculture cages. North America, Europe and Asia are expected to be key markets.
Cage culture is indeed an intensive form of aquaculture; its advantages include: use of many water resources, such as ponds, strip pits, lakes, streams and rivers; low level of required investment; simplicity in sampling, feeding, observation and harvesting; and use of water resources for other activities such as stock watering or recreational fishing.
Fish may be cultured in ponds, raceways, recirculating systems or cages. In a cage or a net pen, fish or shellfish are confined in a mesh enclosure. By strict definition, A cage and a net pen may be strictly differentiated on the basis of construction. While a cage comprises a completely rigid frame on all sides, a net pen carries a rigid frame only close to the top. In practice, the terms ‘cage’ and ‘net pen’ are usually used interchangeably. Marine cages, despite having completely rigid frames, are frequently called net pens.
Generally, four types of cage are employed in cage aquaculture - fixed, floating, submersible and submerged. The fixed cage is the simplest and most extensively employed; it is used in shallow waters (depth of one to three meters). Fixed cage comprises net bag fitted to posts and is planted in the flow of streams, canals, rivers, rivulets, shallow lakes and reservoirs; it does not touch the bottom. While simple and relatively inexpensive, fixed cages have limited use. Floating cages are maintained by a floating frame in which the net bags remain suspended in water; these do not touch the bottom. Floating cages are employed generally in waters having a depth of over five meters. Floating cages come in a variety of shapes and sizes to fit the broad range of conditions of fish culture in open waters. Submersible cages carry net bags that remain suspended from the surface; these cages have changeable buoyancy, and may be flexible or rigid. Submerged net bags are attached to a solid and rugged frame, and are capable of being submerged under water. Their use, however, is limited.
Increasing Demand for Aquatic Products Likely to Boost Market Growth
Fish consumption is expected to increase significantly in developing as well as developed countries due to rapid growth in population, growing affluence and urbanization in emerging nations. The rising demand for fish protein is expected to stimulate the market for aquaculture cages.
Need and Search for Novel, Suitable Sites Expected to Contribute to Market Growth
Aquaculture production systems have witnessed a shift towards grouping of existing cages as well as advancements and usage of more intensive cage-farming systems. Indeed, need and search for apposite sites have led the cage aquaculture subsector to access and expand into novel, untapped open-water culture domains, like lakes, reservoirs, rivers and coastal brackish and marine offshore waters. These factors are expected to contribute to market growth.
