Aluminium Sulfate Market Size and Share Outlook - Forecast Trends and Growth Analysis Report (2025-2034)
Description
The global aluminium sulfate market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 2.30% during the period 2025-2034.
Global Aluminium Sulfate Market Likely to be Driven by Applications in Water Treatment, Food and Pharmaceuticals
The global market for aluminium sulfate is likely to be driven by its uses in water treatment. Applications in food and pharmaceutical sectors are also expected to stimulate the aluminium sulfate industry. Iron free aluminium sulfate (alum) is extensively used in municipal drinking water and wastewater treatment systems. Alum acts as a good primary coagulant in potable water applications. Through charge neutralization and flocculation in raw water, alum eliminates turbidity, suspended solids, total organic carbon (TOC), and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD). Aluminium sulfate hydrolyzes readily to create insoluble precipitates which assist in removal of minute particles that cannot be easily filtered, and/or are too small to settle by gravity.
Food applications of aluminium sulfate include remineralization and clarification of water for soft drinks and beer, controlling pH levels in beets, tomatoes, and other vegetables, purification of sugar beet juices, controlling pH and colour in wine and liquor, leavening agent in cake mix (baking soda), and curdling and thickening cheese.
Aluminium sulfate also has pharmaceutical applications. Solutions with 5 to 10% aluminium sulfate have been used as local applications to treat ulcers and stop foul discharge from mucous surfaces. Further, aluminium sulfate is used to prepare aluminium acetate ear drops. As a solid stick or powder, it is used on minor cuts and abrasions after shaving. Aluminium sulfate is also employed as vaccine adjuvant, and used as a deodorant and an astringent. It has been reported to show anti-microbial activity.
North America, Europe and Asia Pacific are estimated to be key markets
Aluminium sulfate, Al2(SO4)3, is a non-toxic, non-combustible, water-soluble (insoluble in ethanol), odourless, white crystalline chemical compound. It has a sweet, mildly astringent taste. Aluminium sulfate is produced by reacting freshly precipitated aluminium hydroxide with a proper amount of sulfuric acid. It can be supplied as white, lustrous crystals, granules, pieces, or powder.
Other consumer, municipal and industrial applications of aluminium sulfate include manufacture of non-pesticidal agricultural products, cleaning and furnishing care products, manufacture of adhesives and sealant chemicals, non-pesticidal agricultural chemicals, potable water treatment, wastewater treatment (clarification and phosphorus removal), lakes and ponds (elimination of extra nutrients such as phosphates contributing to growth of algae, thereby controlling algae growth), paper mills (charge neutralization, rosin sizing and pitch control), manufacture of pigments and dyes, synthetic catalyst production, building and construction materials, poultry houses (as litter amendment for ammonia control), fabric, textile, leather products, paints, coatings, fire-fighting foams, and personal care products. It is also used to regulate the pH of garden soil and for other industrial, agricultural and consumer uses.
