The demand for alkaline batteries is driven by their use in everyday devices such as alarm clocks, electric shavers, remote controls, radios, etc. While North America and Europe are key markets, Asia Pacific and Latin America hold significant potential as these regions witness a shift from carbon zinc batteries. Middle East and Africa are also experiencing increased use of alkaline batteries. Alkaline batteries deliver acceptable performance at reasonable cost, which is another reason for their popularity. Generally, alkaline batteries are primary disposable batteries, and once discharged, need replacement. An alkaline battery is generally able to power a gadget for two to four months (barring some low-drain applications), and then has to be replaced with a fresh battery. This need for replacement primarily drives the demand for alkaline batteries. Alkaline batteries are also considered environment-friendly, as these can be ordinarily disposed and do not warrant active collection and recycling. Rechargeable or secondary alkaline batteries also are available, but limited to specific applications.

Alkaline batteries work well in low-drain applications, and with low replacement rates. Flashlights, portable radios, alarm clocks, remote controls, and toys are examples of low-drain applications. Currently, the alkaline battery market is dominated by low-drain applications.

Due to the low rate of battery replacement in low-drain applications, this category has a slower compound annual growth rate than the high-drain and other applications. Other applications include medical, industrial, and defence and military. Alkaline batteries are used in medical applications to power various types of infusion pumps, pulse oximeters, blood pressure monitors, and electronic thermometers, and in a variety of industrial applications including smoke alarms, portable transmitters, scanners, digital voltmeters, door locks, remote controls, and laser pointers. Military and defence applications include SINCGARS, man pack radios, and GPS systems. While extensive use of alkaline batteries in developed regions such as the USA and the nations of Western Europe leads to a relatively steady demand and developing nations such as China, Russia, Poland, and Brazil show significant potential, the alkaline battery market faces challenges from primary lithium battery chemistry and rechargeable chemistries. Alkaline batteries are being replaced by nickel metal hydride (NiMH) rechargeable batteries in several high-drain consumer applications. Also, devices today are increasingly using built-in battery systems (such as rechargeable hearing aids), especially in developed markets, which could negatively affect demand.

Nevertheless, large companies are looking to expand their operations and capacities with respect to alkaline battery production. For example, in 2020, Energizer acquired FDK Indonesia, a battery manufacturing facility to increase its alkaline battery production capacity.

Alkaline Battery Definition and Global Market Segmentation

Alkaline batteries are generally single-use batteries carrying electrodes made of zinc and manganese dioxide. Potassium or sodium hydroxide is employed as the alkaline electrolyte. These batteries maintain a constant voltage and have a higher energy density and resistance to leakage than carbon zinc batteries. This is mostly due to the purer and denser manganese dioxide anode material, which requires less room for internal components.

Alkaline batteries are available in a variety of sizes, including AAA, AA, C, D, and 9 V. AAA and AA are appropriate for low-drain applications, while AA is appropriate for high-drain applications. C, D, and 9 V are also well-suited for high-drain applications. AA is the most commonly used alkaline battery cell size, although the AAA size is growing rapidly. Size C, D, and 9 V are employed in a limited number of high-demand applications. Other sizes, such as micro alkaline coin cells and button cells, are employed in a limited number of industrial and medicinal applications.
