Silicon lenses are a type of soft contact lens that allow up to five times more oxygen to permeate the cornea than traditional hydrogel lenses. This allows patients to wear their contacts for longer periods of time without experiencing discomfort from dry eyes, and may even reduce the risk of eye infections. Silicone lenses are available in sphere shape to correct myopia (short-sightedness) and hyperopia (long-sightedness) as well as toric lenses to address astigmatism.
Market Dynamics:
Global Silicone lenses market is expected to witness growth at a strong pace during the forecast period due to increase in number of developments strategies like product launch and acquisition by different contact lenses industry players. For instance, in April 2021, Cooper Vision, a globally recognized manufacturer of contact lenses, announced that it had acquired No7 Contact Lenses, a company that designs and manufactures specialty contact lenses distributed primarily in the U.K. Increasing product approval of contact lenses is anticipated to propel the growth of the market. Silicone hydrogel lenses allow significantly more oxygen to reach the cornea compared to regular hydrogel lenses. This feature is crucial for maintaining eye health and comfort, especially during extended wear, as it helps prevent conditions such as hypoxia.
However, there are some disadvantages to silicone (Si) lenses such as these tend to be harder, and have a higher modulus than regular hydrogels, and can therefore create greater shear forces during wear. This can cause a build-up of protein deposits, eye irritation and other complications. This factor is expected to hamper the market growth.
