The air polishing procedure is performed by dentists for the effective removal of unwanted stains on the surface of the teeth. Improper brushing and cleaning of teeth, formation of plaque, biofilm, smoking, tobacco consumption, or some diseases such as diabetes leads to stains. The procedure is carried out by spraying a fine jet of compressed air and water mixed with air polishing powder, which completely removes the stains, plaque, and biofilm formed on the surface of the teeth. Before initiating the treatment, desensitizing cream is usually applied on the surface in order to reduce the pain caused by the abrasive air polisher. The type of air polishing technique, type of air polishing powder, and the procedure is completely dependent upon the patient’s needs. Therefore, expertise is required for carrying out the procedure.
