Cell culture refers to removal of cells from an animal or plant and subsequent cultivation in an artificial environment for scientific research. Proper conditions should be provided for a cell to grow in lab. For this growth media is used, everything from the pH of the media to the serum type, and its amount, concentration, of additional supplements that are needed must be optimized. Cell culture reagents include cell culture media, media supplements, and sterile reagents. Antibiotics and amino acid supplement are common cell culture reagents. Sera is supplementation of basal cell culture media. Fetal bovine serums are the most commonly used serum supplements for in vitro cell culture. Contamination detection kits are required to ensure that no contamination is present. Cryoprotecting agents are used to prevent formation of ice that causes freezing damage to biological tissue while cooling the organs. It reduce melting point of water by getting dissolved in it. Different types of equipment like culture systems, biosafety cabinets, incubators, and cryostorage equipment are used in cell culture. Cell and tissue culture is the most commonly used technique for vaccine production, drug screening & development, gene therapy, toxicity testing, cancer research, and others.
Market Dynamics
Increasing launches of new products, and mergers and acquisitions by key market players is expected to drive the global cell and tissue culture supplies market growth. For instance, on February 23, 2022, Moderna Inc., a U.S.-based biotechnology company, and Thermo Fischer Scientific Inc., a U.S.-based scientific instrument company, announced 15-year strategic collaboration agreement for large scale manufacturing of Spikevax, Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine in the U.S. The collaboration was for both clinical research and contract manufacturing services. This included the quick scale-up of aseptic fill-finish services and packaging of its vaccine. As part of this expanded agreement, Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., provided dedicated capacity for a range of aseptic fill-finish services including lyophilized and liquid filling. Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., also provided inspection, labeling, and final packaging services.
