South Africa's automotive composites market is expanding as the nation’s automotive sector increasingly incorporates advanced materials to improve vehicle performance, reduce weight, and boost fuel efficiency. The use of composites like fiberglass, carbon fiber, and natural fibers is rising, driven by the growing demand for sustainable and efficient transportation options. Vehicle production in South Africa grew from 446,210 units in 2020 to 510,000 units in 2022, according to the International Trade Administration. In 2021, South Africa introduced the Automotive Masterplan (SAAM) 2021–2035, targeting an annual production of 1.4 million vehicles by 2035, which would account for about 1% of global vehicle output. The country’s seven original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) invested approximately US$460 million in 2021. With a well-established automotive industry that includes major global players and a shift towards electric vehicles, the demand for lightweight materials continues to rise. As the market for eco-friendly vehicles grows, South Africa’s automotive composites sector is set for further development, supporting both local production and exports.
