The performance of lithium-ion batteries primarily depends on the structure and properties of the battery materials. Lithium-ion battery materials mainly consist of cathode materials, anode materials, separators, and electrolytes, with the cathode and anode materials directly determining key performance parameters such as energy density and battery lifespan. These materials are therefore the critical factors affecting lithium-ion battery performance, with cathode materials alone accounting for nearly one-third of the battery cost. The global market for lithium-ion battery cathode materials is dominated by a concentration of producers from China, Japan, and South Korea, with these three countries together holding more than 80% of the global market share.

Cathode materials include lithium iron phosphate (LFP), ternary materials (NCM/NCA), lithium cobalt oxide (LCO), and lithium manganese oxide (LMO). They may adopt layered structures, such as lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO₂), lithium nickel-cobalt-manganese oxide (NCM), and lithium nickel-cobalt-aluminum oxide (NCA), olivine-type structures such as lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO₄), or spinel-structured materials. These materials feature stable crystal frameworks that allow lithium ions to reversibly intercalate and deintercalate. Currently, lithium iron phosphate has the largest share among cathode materials and continues to grow.

Mainstream cathode materials differ in performance. Ternary materials and lithium iron phosphate offer comprehensive advantages over lithium cobalt oxide and lithium manganese oxide in terms of performance, lifespan, and safety. LFP and ternary materials each have distinct strengths: LFP benefits from low cost, long cycle life, and higher safety, with production expected to continue growing rapidly. Ternary materials, while more expensive, with shorter cycle life and lower safety, provide higher energy density and better low-temperature performance.

In China, during the first quarter of 2025, shipments of cathode materials reached 1 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 68%. Among these, lithium iron phosphate shipments reached 760,000 tons, up 94% year-on-year, accounting for 75.8% of total cathode material shipments and leading the industry’s growth. Ternary materials shipments reached 170,000 tons, up 11% year-on-year. Shipments of lithium cobalt oxide and lithium manganese oxide were 30,000 tons and 38,000 tons, respectively, increasing by 47% and 36% year-on-year. The share of lithium iron phosphate exceeded 75% for the first time, mainly driven by demand from energy storage and new energy vehicles.
